Washington in all his glory
So I got an IUD today. I was tired of the pill for many reasons, including the persistent headaches, the weight gain, the increase in PMS, the environmental problems, and the fact that the hormones in them are animal derived. An IUD is cheaper, more effective, and I don't have to even think about it. And it's good for TEN YEARS, woo!
Anyhoo. It hurt like a beeotch, but nothing I couldn't handle. If you've ever had horrible menstrual cramps, like the women in my family seem to do, that's what it seemed like except a little more intense.
I named it Washington, after this webcartoon. I figured if anyone's going to keep evil sperm out of my uterus, that motherfucker is.
Excerpt:
He’ll save children but not the British children
He had a pocket full of horses fucked the shit out of bears
He threw a knife into heaven
And could kill with a stare
He made love like an eagle falling out of the sky
Killed his sensei in a duel and he never said why
Washington
Washington
Twelve stories high made of radiation
The present beware
The future beware
He’s coming
He’s coming
He’s coming

The worst is over (right?), so it sounds like a good idea.
I think I've just never been crazy about IUDs since my mom told me that she had had one and had some problems -but hers was the Dalkon Shield that was later recalled, so there you go. I understand they've got that all sorted out now, so yay. :)
What's the average effectiveness of IUDs; do you/will you have to use anything else (at least for a time)? I don't know too much about the new ones... And I'm sorry for my forwardness, feel free to ignore. I'm just glad everything has gone well for you. :)
The worst is over, I think. :) I had some cramping yesterday, but I went to sleep with one of those stick-on heating pads and it's faded to more of a dull cramp. Still going to take medication today though (ibuprofen).
The Dalkon Shield in the 70s had a lot of problems and was badly designed, but because of the media attention, IUDs never regained popularity. In the states there's only 2 available, in Europe there's like 12 or something. The slideshow I had to watch said only 2% of American women use IUDs. However in Britain, Europe, China, and Arab countries, 15-40% use them.
The average effectiveness of an IUD is a little over 99%, which makes it more effective than the pill and like .6% less effective than a tubal ligation. Because I had it put in mid-cycle, I do have to use condoms until after my next period (but honestly I'm still feeling kind of meh, and since that's only two weeks from now, I'm okay with that, heh).
I got the Paragard, the non-hormonal one. If you want, the site is http://paragard.com/. :)
Clearly Blogger needs to offer a way to flag posts as "chicks only" or something because I totally just had to Google IUD to figure out what the hell you were talking about...
Glad everything worked out for you, though ... I think? *shrug*
How does one get to be a man your age and not know what an IUD is? The educational system in this country has clearly failed somewhere.
LOL, Ian didn't know what it was either! Silly mens, only knowing about their own bits (and where they like to put 'em). I bet they couldn't find their own vas deferens. :P
